What is the Allurion Elipse™ Balloon?

The Allurion Elipse™ Balloon is the first swallowable weight loss balloon that involves no surgery, endoscopy and anaesthesia.

Designed to reduce your food intake by taking up space in your stomach, it offers a minimally invasive option available at our bariatric clinic.

Is the Allurion Elipse™Balloon easy to swallow?

According to published clinical data, 99.9% of patients were successful in swallowing the Allurion Elipse™ Balloon. If, however, you find it difficult to swallow the capsule on your own, our doctors will assist you by inserting a thin wire into the catheter to stiffen it slightly, then gently guide it past your throat so that you swallow it swiftly and smoothly.⁷

What does the procedure involve?

The placement of the Allurion Elipse™ Balloon, which does not require any surgery, 内窥镜检查, or anaesthesia, takes around 20 minutes. Contained within a capsule, the deflated balloon is attached to a thin tube called a catheter.

These are the following steps for the balloon placement:

Step 1: Swallow the capsule with water.
Step 2: Upon swallowing, the first X-ray will be carried out to make sure that the capsule is in the correct position.
Step 3: Our doctor will fill up the balloon with liquid via the catheter.
Step 4: A second X-ray will be conducted to ensure that the balloon is properly filled.
Step 5: Once confirmed, our doctor will gently remove the catheter from the balloon. The placement will be considered complete.

After a period of about 4 months, the balloon will automatically empty itself through the opening of a time-activated release valve. The deflated balloon will naturally passed out through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract during the opening of your bowels, without any need for a removal procedure*.

*In rare cases, the Allurion Elipse™ Balloon may require endoscopic or surgical intervention for removal. In rare cases, the empty balloon may be vomited instead of passing through the GI tract.

Are there any possible side effects after the balloon placement?

Nausea, abdominal cramps, and occasional vomiting are some of the possible side-effects that may occur after the balloon placement. However, in most cases, these symptoms are temporary and well controlled with commonly used medications prescribed for such symptoms.^{1 11}
